The Story

This is a heavyweight bottling from the Buffalo Trace Antique Collection, specifically noted for being the highest proof release in the history of the William Larue Weller line.

William Larue Weller 2002 was distilled in the spring of 2002 and aged for 12 years and 3 months on the second, third, fourth, and sixth floors of Warehouses D, K, and L. Bottled in the fall of 2014, this uncut and unfiltered wheated bourbon reached a staggering 70.1% ABV. The 2014 release was vatted from just 39 barrels, with an evaporation loss of over 62%, resulting in an outturn of approximately 3,933 bottles.

The use of wheat as the secondary grain—a method pioneered by Weller in the 1840s—provides a softer, denser profile that remains balanced even at this extreme proof. This specific vintage is widely cited by collectors for its integration of oak and high-alcohol heat, earning it the title of World Whisky of the Year in the 2015 Whisky Bible.

Tasting Notes The nose carries scents of caramel corn, new leather, plums, and pipe tobacco. On the palate, there are concentrated notes of marshmallow, salted almonds, figs, and dates. The finish is long and sweet with lingering traces of dark chocolate and toasted oak.
