Lindores Abbey MCDXCIV Commemorative First Release marks the debut whisky from Lindores Abbey Distillery in the Lowlands. The name MCDXCIV refers to the year 1494, when the earliest written record of Scotch whisky appears in the Exchequer Rolls, noting that Friar John Cor was commissioned to make aqua vitae at Lindores Abbey.
This first release is matured in a combination of ex bourbon barrels, wine barriques and sherry butts, reflecting the distillery’s approach of building complexity through cask diversity while allowing the spirit character to remain visible. Bottled at 46 percent without chill filtration, it represents the distillery’s first mature expression after its modern revival.
The nose opens with orchard fruit, vanilla and soft spice with hints of dried fruit from the wine and sherry casks. On the palate the whisky shows creamy malt, baked apple, caramel and gentle oak with light cinnamon and citrus lift. The finish is medium length, smooth and balanced with a touch of sweet spice.
As the first official whisky release from Lindores Abbey Distillery, this bottle represents an important milestone for a site closely tied to the early recorded history of Scotch whisky.
